In 2023, the District began using a new content filtering suite named Linewize. To comply with Federal CIPA law, all devices issued and used by staff and students at Fremont Co School Dist #1 must have content filtering installed.
A facet of our new filter is “Linewize Monitor,” a student threat detection tool that monitors school-issued accounts and helps us spot potentially at-risk students. Linewize Monitor watches all content a student creates or interacts with – emails, classroom postings, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, etc – for potential risks such as depression, self-harm, bullying, and other criteria. When a potential risk is detected, the software sends a screenshot and details of the potential risk to building staff, who then evaluate the information and, if necessary, follows up with the student via conversation or additional resources. For criteria that Linewize deems critical or immediate, a human monitor at Linewize also sends a text or phone call to those school contacts.
Linewize Monitor protects ACCOUNTS, no matter where they are used. If a student uses their school account on a personally-owned device, the Linewize Monitor will be monitoring account usage on that personal device. On personal devices at home, this may not be desired or appropriate.
To avoid this, a student should use their school account only on school-owned devices. If they still choose to use their account on a personal device by signing into the Chrome web browser, they should be sure that they sign out of their school account in the browser if they wish to maintain privacy, or if other people in the household are using the device. Linewize is only active in the Chrome web browser when a student account signs in; no software is installed on the personal device.
Please note that no content filtering or content analysis system is perfect nor complete. If a student is using a school account or a school device at home, parental supervision and common-sense guidelines will complement our filtering security software.
