A Chromebook is a mobile computer specifically designed for education. They are used with a Google Workspace for Education account and their battery can generally last at least a full day of usage. All stored work will be accessible from home, school, and anywhere there is an Internet connection.
Chromebooks are very tightly integrated into Google Apps for Education, so each student will use their school account to access their Chromebook.. Chromebooks do not use Microsoft Windows or Windows-based software, making them very easy to manage and troubleshoot. They are also free of any malware or "ransomware" attacks that may afflict traditional PCs.
The total cost for each student Chromebook is around $250 -- device, management license, and accidental damage warranty.
Chromebooks are assigned to the following user groups:
All Administrative and Certified staff will be assigned a Chromebook. Classified staff are assigned Chromebooks based on need as defined in their job description, as well as with principal approval.
Students in grades 5-12 have a Chromebook individually assigned to them.
Students in Fifth Grade keep their device through the end of their Eighth Grade school year
Students in Ninth Grade (at LVHS or PHS) keep their device through their senior year. These students may be given device take-home privileges, depending on school policy and individual determination.
Students in grade K-4 have classroom sets of Chromebooks that are used by that class. They may be assigned by the classroom teacher to students for convenience and management.
It is important to note that students and staff are not "given" Chromebooks; rather, they are assigned to that student for the duration of their use. Assignment is not a right, and ownership of the device remains solely with the District. Assigned devices are recorded in tech database and the assigned device is expected to be returned when the student or staff member departs the district.
Staff and students are expected to take reasonable care of their assigned devices. Damage should be promptly reported either to the in-school library (for students), or to the Technology Office (for staff).
Students who damage devices will be subject to the terms outlined in their school handbook. Intentional damage and vandalism may be charged at the full or prorated price of the device. If a device is lost or stolen, a police report may be required to prevent the student being charged for the device.
A Chromebook battery should last for an entire day of full usage.
You can extend battery length by dimming the screen. Use the brightness keys (usually XXXXX) to choose a brightness level that lets you work comfortably without the screen being too bright or too dim.
Close the lid to put the Chromebook to sleep when you move between classes, but select to shut down at night to save battery charge.
Close any unnecessary background tabs, particularly YouTube and other video and audio streaming sites. These make constant connections even if they're not the active tab.
Chrome extensions and Android Apps can extend the functionality of the Chrome browser and other apps.
To prevent students from installing potentially time-wasting and noneducational extensions, all apps and extensions are vetted and added to a special approval list for student accounts.
